The IT giant Microsoft has made the final investment decision to establish three data centers in the municipalities of Esbjerg and Varde.
Microsoft's decision to establish three data centers is the culmination of several years of targeted work, and an important step for the area's digital development.
After several years of targeted work, Esbjerg and Varde Municipalities can today announce that the world's largest IT company, Microsoft, has made the final investment decision to establish three data centers in the area. The announcement creates both joy and pride among the involved parties and marks an important step in realizing the area's digital ambitions.
An investment built on solid and close cooperation
An investment of this size is not made overnight. Microsoft has needed in-depth insight into, among other things, the labor market, supply security, possibilities for the use of surplus heat, the physical conditions, and the general sustainability profile, and here the Bramming site showed to have the right profile.
To be able to provide the necessary knowledge and security, the process has required close and coordinated cooperation between Esbjerg Municipality, Bramming District Heating, Din Forsyning, and Invest in Esbjerg, each of which has contributed crucial local insight and technical expertise. At the same time, Microsoft has wanted reassurance that cooperation with local authorities and organizations can function smoothly both during the establishment phase and in the long term.
It is precisely this joint cooperation that has helped create clarity and trust in the decision-making process.
"It has been a pleasure to work with Microsoft's extremely professional setup. They know exactly what they need to make decisions at a high level, and the dialogue has been both efficient and inspiring."
Invest in Esbjerg's role: Coordination, knowledge, and professional sparring
Invest in Esbjerg has for many years built strong competencies in handling complex investment cases, and in connection with Microsoft, the organization's Task Force model has once again proven its worth.
Investment Manager at Business Esbjerg, Mikael Kirk Simonsen, has been deeply involved in the case throughout the process.
"It has been a pleasure to work with Microsoft's extremely professional setup. They know exactly what they need to make decisions at a high level, and the dialogue has been both efficient and inspiring. We look forward to the continued work and the development their presence can create for the entire area," says Mikael Kirk Simonsen.
For more than 10 years, Mikael has worked with Invest in Esbjerg's ambition to position Esbjerg as Northern Europe's digital hub, and he has met a broad spectrum of international investors. With Microsoft's decision, the vision now moves closer than ever.
"Esbjerg and Varde have shown impressive readiness and professionalism. We have experienced strong cooperation across Esbjerg Municipality, Invest in Esbjerg, Bramming District Heating, and Din Forsyning. There is a very special will to succeed, which has made a great impression on us."
Microsoft: Esbjerg has the right conditions
Managing Director of Microsoft Denmark, Mette Kaagaard, emphasizes the quality of the cooperation as an important factor in the decision-making process.
"Esbjerg and Varde have shown impressive readiness and professionalism. We have experienced strong cooperation across Esbjerg Municipality, Invest in Esbjerg, Bramming District Heating, and Din Forsyning. There is a very special will to succeed, which has made a great impression on us. We look forward to contributing to Esbjerg's ambition to become Northern Europe's hub within cloud, AI, and sustainable technologies that can accelerate the digital and green transition,"
Support for the educational effort in Southwest Jutland
Microsoft also supports Esbjerg's major effort to strengthen both higher education and access to skilled labor. In cooperation with Education Esbjerg and Business Esbjerg, the company wishes to actively contribute to the development of an even stronger and more attractive study environment in Southwest Jutland. The goal is to create better conditions for more young people to choose a vocational or higher education in Esbjerg and thereby support the growing need for competencies in both the digital and green sectors.

A cooperation that creates value for the entire area
For Invest in Esbjerg, the work is not only about attracting international investments but also about ensuring that they create real value for local businesses. Head of Business & Investment, Uffe Lundgaard, emphasizes that Microsoft has already shown great interest in understanding local conditions and engaging in the long-term development of the business community in the area.
"We are pleased with Microsoft's interest in becoming an active part of the local business development. We expect to be able to activate our supplier list and create new opportunities for local companies. The cooperation with Esbjerg Municipality, Invest in Denmark, Bramming District Heating, and Din Forsyning has been exemplary and shows what we can achieve when we work purposefully and collectively," he says.
Invest in Esbjerg looks ahead
Microsoft's investment decision is a significant step, but not the end. Invest in Esbjerg continues the work of attracting international companies and developing the area as a center for data centers, digital infrastructure, and green technology. The experience gained through the Microsoft process will strengthen future processes and make the region even more attractive for new investments.
