Power-to-X production

Energy and data

With green electricity from the North Sea, Esbjerg has a unique position for investments in Power-to-X production.
Power to X
Esbjerg is at the forefront of future energy production. With three announced Power-to-X plants, Esbjerg is showing the way for a new era in green energy production.

With green electricity from the North Sea, Esbjerg has a unique position for investments in Power-to-X production. In close cooperation with the local utility company, DIN Forsyning, the technical water supply is secured, and Esbjerg is showing the way towards future sustainable business models.

POWER-TO-X CASES

Through the conversion of electricity and water into electrolysis, Swiss H2 Energy, European Energy, and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners are in the process of establishing large plants for the production of hydrogen and ammonia in Esbjerg.

The production is powered exclusively by green energy and aims to deliver new fuel solutions for the transport sector – especially for trucks and shipping. The projects will together produce more than two gigawatts of hydrogen and ammonia.

Another example is Quantafuel and Resource Denmark ApS, who will use pyrolysis to convert plastic waste into chemically recycled products – also called plastic-to-liquid (PtL). The goal is to create a circular industry where new plastic products are based on chemically recycled materials.

Waste heat is utilized

During hydrogen production, large amounts of surplus heat arise. In Esbjerg, this heat is not wasted – it is integrated into the district heating system and helps heat thousands of homes. The two upcoming Power-to-X plants are expected to deliver enough heat for more than 15,000 households.

This happens in close collaboration between the Power-to-X actors and DIN Forsyning, which is responsible for water and heat supply to both citizens and businesses.

The collaboration is part of Esbjerg Municipality’s goal to become CO₂-neutral by 2030.
